Great wines in Bordeaux
We were a bit nervous about driving in the city of Bordeaux so skirted around it and drove NW to Pauillac to find a camp site. Next day we did a wine tour looking at chateaux and took in a couple of tastings. Saw many of the classic names of the Haut-Medoc such as Mouton Rothschild and Pichon Logueville. These are not the sort of places you can drop in for a sip and spit. Headed south in the afternoon to the wine regions of Tursan and Madiran. The wines here a big tasty tannic beasts at a fraction of the price of those around the city of Bordeaux. We found a nice little rural campsite shared with a few jolly campervan and caravan people. Carried on the next day to the wine region of Jurancon. We did a tasting here and found some great wines at bargain prices - around NZ$6 - 8. Then headed for Biarritz which we skirted around on our last trip here 4 years ago. Interesting place if you are interested in the semi-naked female body. A nice beach with golden sand and a few little rocky offshore islands. An international tourist spot for an upmarket beach holiday. We then drove on looking for a camp ground. A little further down the coast a St Jean de Luz we found an area with about 20 campgrounds. We took a punt on the first one we came across. It was very good although a nearby headbanging concert went until about 2 in the morning.
